‘Personal information’ means any information which relates to or identifies you as an individual.
Who will process my personal information?
The information provided here applies to the collection, use, maintenance, sharing and disclosure of your personal information when you apply to become or matriculate as a student or exchange visitor with the University of Connecticut. Your information will be processed by assigned staff of the University of Connecticut, and/or any entities with whom we have contracted (our processors) providing specific services to, or on behalf of, the University of Connecticut.
What personal information will be processed?
For international (non-United States nationals) applicants to undergraduate degree programs at the University of Connecticut:
In the course of the admission process into undergraduate degree programs at the University of Connecticut, we collect, use and maintain the following personal information about applicants: name, address, date of birth, email address, telephone number, emergency contact information, voluntary response to application questions concerning your race, gender, ethnic origin, and history of criminal conviction, native language and proof of English proficiency documentation, marital status, country/city of birth, citizenship information, passport, visa application information, previous degrees and transcripts, past academic and/or employment history, test scores, past community and leadership participation, interest major/intended course of study, financial documentation, and any information you voluntarily disclose in your personal essay submitted with your application for admission. Upon matriculation, we will use and maintain this information and additional information including financial documentation and/or prior immigration history as necessary to secure your visa status if you require visa sponsorship by the University of Connecticut.
For international (non-United States nationals) applicants to graduate degree programs at the University of Connecticut:
In the course of the admission process into graduate degree programs at the University of Connecticut, we collect, use and maintain the following personal information about applicants: name, address, date of birth, email address, telephone number, emergency contact information, voluntary response to application questions concerning your race, gender, ethnic origin, native language and proof of English proficiency documentation, marital status, country/city of birth, history of criminal conviction or behavioral infractions at prior post-secondary institutions, passport, degree and transcripts, past academic and/or employment history, financial documentation, and any information you voluntarily disclose to your targeted academic department or in your personal essay submitted with your application for admission. Upon matriculation, we will use and maintain this information and additional information including financial documentation and/or prior immigration history as necessary to secure your visa status if you require visa sponsorship by the University of Connecticut.
For international (non-United States nationals) exchange visitor applicants at the University of Connecticut:
In the course of the admission process to become an exchange visitor at the University of Connecticut, we collect, use and maintain the following personal information about applicants: name, address, date of birth, email address, telephone number, emergency contact information, voluntary response to application questions concerning your race, gender, ethnic origin, and history of criminal conviction, native language and proof of English proficiency documentation, marital status, country/city of birth, passport, degree and transcripts, past academic and/or employment history, financial documentation, and any information you voluntarily disclose to your targeted academic department or exchange program as part of your application materials. If you are accepted as an exchange visitor, we will use and maintain that information and additional information including financial documentation and/or prior immigration history as necessary to secure your visa status if you require visa sponsorship by the University of Connecticut.
For international (non-United States nationals) applicants to UConn Law, including LLM programs and Executive LLM programs:
In the course of the admission process for academic programs (e.g., Juris Doctorate, LLM, Executive LLM) at UConn Law, we collect, use and maintain the following personal information about applicants: name, address, date of birth, email address, telephone number, emergency contact information, voluntary response to application questions concerning your race, gender, ethnic origin, and history of criminal conviction, native language and proof of English proficiency documentation, marital status, country/city of birth, passport, degree and transcripts, past academic and/or employment history, financial documentation, and any information you voluntarily disclose as part of your application for admission. Upon matriculation, we will use and maintain that information and additional information including financial documentation and/or prior immigration history as necessary to secure your visa status if you require visa sponsorship by the University of Connecticut.
For international (non-United States nationals) applicants to University of Connecticut Non-Degree and Non-Credit Programs (including UCAELI, GTDI):
In the course of the admission process for Non-Degree and Non-Credit Programs at the University of Connecticut, we collect, use and maintain the following personal information about applicants: name, address, date of birth, email address, telephone number, emergency contact information, voluntary response to application questions concerning your race, gender, ethnic origin, and history of criminal conviction, native language and proof of English proficiency documentation (where applicable), marital status, country/city of birth, passport, degree and transcripts, past academic and/or employment history, financial documentation, and any information you voluntarily disclose as part of your application for admission. Upon matriculation, we will use and maintain that information and additional information including financial documentation and/or prior immigration history as necessary to secure your visa status if you require visa sponsorship by the University of Connecticut.
For international (non-United States nationals) applicants with dependents:
In addition, where applicable we collect, use and maintain the following personal information about applicants' dependents (spouse and unmarried child under age 21) who require visa sponsorship from the University of Connecticut, as necessary for your dependents to secure visa status: name, address, email address, telephone number, passport, place of birth, gender, marital status, and prior immigration history.
What is the purpose and legal basis of the processing?
The University of Connecticut processes the personal information provided on your application to participate and/or enroll in an academic program at the University of Connecticut and the other information referred to above for the purposes of identifying you, processing your application, verifying the information provided, deciding whether to offer you admission to the program(s) to which you have applied, and communicating the outcome of your application for admission to you. If you are admitted as a student or exchange visitor with the University of Connecticut, your information will be used to administer our contractual services to you as a student or exchange visitor, including support services such as advising, residential housing, athletic program, student development, and fundraising activities. If you are admitted and require visa sponsorship, your personal information will be used to process your visa sponsorship.
Such processing occurs in accordance with legal requirements and in accordance with policies and procedures of the University of Connecticut and/or for purposes in the public interest when considering applications to participate and/or enroll in academic or exchange visitor programs at the University of Connecticut. These public interests include:
- The prevention and/or detection of fraud.
- To ensure that criteria and prerequisites for admission to academic or exchange visitor programs at the University of Connecticut have been met by the applicant.
- To meet applicable State and Federal regulatory requirements related to immigration and employment.
- For research and statistical purposes, as permitted and/or required by law. However, any such information will be published in aggregate form so as not to allow for identification of personal information of an individual applicant or employee.
- For outreach efforts.
We consider the processing of your personal information for the above purposes to be either necessary for us to take steps with a view to creating a contractual relationship with you (e.g. to assess your application to study or participate in a program with us), or necessary for compliance with a legal obligation (e.g. meeting applicable legal requirement regarding visa issuance, immigration status or employment verification), or necessary for the performance of tasks we carry out in the public interest (e.g. admissions research). We require you to provide us with the information we ask for during the application process in order to assess your application properly and ensure that criteria for admissions have been met.
Who will my personal information be shared with and/or disclosed to?
As well as circulating your application and related materials to the appropriate staff at the University of Connecticut, we may share your personal information for the above purposes as appropriate and/or required with:
- Where relevant and as required, federal immigration authorities in order to administer relevant legal and regulatory obligations.
- Vendors (our processors) providing specific services to, or on behalf of, the University of Connecticut. Vendors are legally and/or contractually obligated to keep your personal data confidential subject to appropriate safeguards to prevent it from unauthorized disclosure.
- Accrediting bodies responsible for assessments of University programs, as necessary and appropriate.
- Individuals or entities conducting studies for or on behalf of the University of Connecticut regarding effectiveness in admissions, consideration of additional international and exchange programs, and to improve admissions processes.
- Your examining boards or awarding bodies.
- Your home educational institution where required by contract.
- Your financial sponsors or loan organizations to assist with and then confirm admission.
- Other higher education organizations, in order to assist with tracking and research regarding access to education or admission.
- Other higher education organizations upon your request if you request a transfer to a different institution.
- In the event of an emergency, local authorities and/or professionals on an as-needed basis.
How can I access my personal information?
You have the right to access the personal information that is maintained about you by the University of Connecticut. You also have the right to ask us to correct any inaccurate personal information we maintain about you, to delete personal information subject to applicable record retention requirements, or in some instances to otherwise restrict our processing, or to object to processing or to receive an electronic copy of the personal information you provided to us. How long is my information kept?
We store your personal information in accordance with applicable records retention requirements established by the State of Connecticut and/or other Federal or State legal requirements. If you have any questions about how your personal information is used, or wish to exercise any of your rights regarding how your information is used, please contact the University’s Office of Privacy Protection & Management at privacy@uconn.edu.
If you are located in the European Union and feel the University has violated laws related to the European Union General Data Protection Regulation 2016/679, you also have the right to file a complaint with the appropriate EU supervisory authority. Such country-specific rules and regulations may also apply to other countries and specific locations.
How will I know if changes are made regarding how my information is used?
